The Works of the Right Honourable Edmund Burke, Vol. 01 (of 12)
This is the first volume of the twelve-volume edition of Edmund Burke's works published by John C. Nimmo in 1887. It opens with the two books of Burke's youth: A Vindication of Natural Society, published anonymously in 1756, a parody of Bolingbroke's reasoning that was taken by some readers as a serious attack on all government; and A Philosophical Inquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful of 1757, the treatise on aesthetics that made his name, with its introductory discourse on taste and its account of how terror, obscurity, vastness and power produce the sublime. The volume continues with Burke's earliest political writings on the ministries and discontents of the 1760s. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
