The Wars of the Jews; Or, The History of the Destruction of Jerusalem
The Wars of the Jews is the history that Flavius Josephus, a Jewish commander who surrendered to the Romans and ended as a client of the emperors, wrote in Rome around AD 75 to explain the revolt he had taken part in. The seven books begin with the Maccabees and Herod the Great and lead through the misgovernment of the procurators to the uprising of 66, the campaigns of Vespasian in Galilee, the factional fighting inside Jerusalem, the siege and the burning of the Temple by Titus in AD 70, and the last stand at Masada. Josephus is an eyewitness with his own case to plead, and the book is read for both reasons. This edition presents William Whiston's translation. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
