Antiquities of the Jews

by Flavius Josephus

Translated by William WhistonAbout 36 h 22 min of reading308 chapters

The Antiquities of the Jews, completed around AD 93, is Flavius Josephus's history of his people from the creation to the eve of the revolt against Rome in 66. The first half retells the Hebrew Bible for Greek and Roman readers, with additions from tradition; the second covers the period the Bible does not, from the Persian and Greek rulers through the Maccabees, the Hasmonean kings and the reign of Herod the Great to the Roman governors, and for much of that period it is the only continuous source. Josephus, a priest and general who had gone over to the Romans, writes to defend the dignity of Jewish law. William Whiston's translation of 1737 has been the standard English version ever since. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
