The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle
The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, published in 1922 and illustrated by the author, is the second of Hugh Lofting's books about the doctor who can speak with animals, and it won the Newbery Medal. It is narrated by Tommy Stubbins, a cobbler's son who becomes the doctor's assistant and learns animal languages from Polynesia the parrot. Together with Bumpo, Chee-Chee and Jip, they sail in search of the great naturalist Long Arrow and land on Spidermonkey Island, a floating island off the coast of South America, where the doctor helps the Popsipetel people and is crowned king. Inventive, gentle and humorous, it remains one of the best loved of the series. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
