The Story of Doctor Dolittle, published in 1920, introduces the country physician of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh who loses his human patients because his house is full of animals, and who, taught by his parrot Polynesia, learns to speak their languages instead. Summoned to Africa to cure an epidemic among the monkeys, he sails with Jip the dog, Dab-Dab the duck, Gub-Gub the pig and the rest, is imprisoned by a king, escapes with the monkeys' help, and comes home with the two-headed pushmi-pullyu. Hugh Lofting invented the doctor in letters to his children from the trenches of the First World War, and illustrated the book himself. It was the first of a long series. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
