The Vision of Hell is the Inferno of Dante Alighieri in the blank-verse translation of Henry Francis Cary, first published in 1805 and the version through which English readers from Coleridge and Keats onward discovered Dante. This edition is illustrated with the seventy-five designs of Gustave Dore, whose engravings of the dark wood, the whirlwind of lovers, the city of Dis, the forest of suicides, the frozen lake and the giant Lucifer have become inseparable from the poem. In thirty-four cantos Dante is guided by Virgil down through the nine circles of the damned, meeting Francesca, Farinata, Brunetto Latini, Ulysses and Ugolino among the souls who tell him their stories.
