The New Life (La Vita Nuova)

by Dante Alighieri

Translated by Dante Gabriel RossettiAbout 1 h 39 min of reading3 chapters

The New Life, La Vita Nuova, is the book in which Dante, around 1294, gathered the poems he had written for Beatrice Portinari and surrounded them with a prose account of his love from their first meeting as children through her death in 1290, together with analyses of each poem. The sonnets and canzoni, the dreams and visions, the ladies who screen the poet's devotion and the final promise to say of Beatrice what was never said of any woman point directly toward the Divine Comedy. This is the translation by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, made in his early twenties and first published in 1861, reissued in 1899 in the Siddal Edition with a prefatory note. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
