Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus tells of a German scholar who has mastered every branch of learning and found none of them enough, and who signs his soul to Lucifer in exchange for twenty-four years of power with the devil Mephistophilis as his servant. He uses his gifts on spectacle and pranks, at the papal court and the emperor's, while good and evil angels contend for him and the hour of reckoning approaches. This edition by Havelock Ellis follows the 1604 text, with some readings from that of 1616, and divides the play into scenes.
