The strange transfiguration of Hannah Stubbs

by Florence Marryat

About 5 h 14 min of reading21 chapters

Signor Ricardo, an impoverished Italian exile who teaches his language from lodgings in Soho, is regular in his habits and payments and, his landlady insists, a mystery. The mystery turns on what he does in his rooms after ten at night, and on Hannah Stubbs, a coarse, ignorant servant girl who proves to be a medium of extraordinary power and begins, under his sittings, to change into someone else. Florence Marryat was a committed spiritualist who had written a nonfiction account of her own séances, and this novel of 1896 puts her beliefs into fiction with a frankness about possession and the dangers of the practice that makes it one of the stranger Victorian occult novels. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
