How they loved him, Vol. 2 (of 3)
The second volume of Florence Marryat's three-volume novel of 1882 opens with Fenella Barrington, young, lonely and without a parent to guard her, surrendering completely to the passion that has overtaken her. The eight chapters that follow carry her through desertion and a strait she cannot see her way out of, introduce Sir Gilbert Conroy, and end on what the final chapter calls an indissoluble link. Marryat, the daughter of the naval novelist Captain Marryat, wrote more than sixty novels and was a frank chronicler of women's emotional lives by the standards of her day. The first volume is also available; this one continues the story directly. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
