The Story of My Life, volumes 1-3
Augustus J. C. Hare, the Victorian writer of guidebooks and family memoirs, began setting down his recollections in 1878 to amuse a sick friend, and published them as The Story of My Life from 1896. These first three volumes cover his family background, a strict and often lonely childhood with the aunt who adopted him and whom he called his mother, schooldays, Oxford, long stays abroad, his work on handbooks to the English counties, and the years of home life with her until her death. Drawn from letters and journals, the book is crowded with country houses, clergy, travelers and eccentric relations, and it is candid about the unhappiness as well as the pleasures of his youth. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
