Augustus J. C. Hare (1834–1903) was an English writer of travel guides and memoirs. Born in Rome and given away as an infant to his widowed aunt Maria Hare, he had the cold and pious upbringing he later described in The Story of My Life, an autobiography in six volumes stuffed with society anecdotes and ghost stories. His guidebooks, among them Walks in Rome, Days near Rome, Cities of Northern and Central Italy and Walks in London, were standard companions for Victorian travelers, and his Memorials of a Quiet Life, about his adoptive family, was widely read. He never married and spent his later years at Holmhurst in Sussex.
