The Satyricon — Volume 05: Crotona Affairs
This fifth volume of W. C. Firebaugh's translation of the Satyricon contains the Crotona episode, chapters 125 to 141 of the surviving text. Encolpius, the narrator, and the old poet Eumolpus have arrived in the southern Italian town posing as a rich, childless man and his retinue, and the local legacy hunters compete to keep them in luxury. Encolpius, under the name Polyaenos, becomes involved with a woman named Circe, suffers a humiliating failure and seeks cures from witches, while Eumolpus dictates a will with a grotesque condition for his heirs. The forged passages added in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are marked in brackets so that the reader can tell Petronius from his imitators. The volume ends where the manuscript tradition breaks off. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
