The Satyricon — Complete

by Petronius Arbiter

Translated by W. C. FirebaughAbout 6 h 31 min of reading190 chapters

The Satyricon is the surviving portion of a long Latin novel from the first century AD, attributed to Petronius, a courtier of Nero. Its narrator Encolpius drifts through southern Italy with his companion Ascyltos and the boy Giton, quarreling, cheating and being cheated, and the longest surviving episode, the dinner of Trimalchio, is the classic portrait of a vulgar freedman showing off his wealth. Later fragments follow the travelers to sea with the poet Eumolpus and to the town of Crotona, where they pose as a rich man and his heirs among legacy hunters. W. C. Firebaugh's translation of 1922 is complete and unexpurgated, and it incorporates, clearly marked, the passages forged in later centuries to fill the gaps. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
