The Reign of William Rufus and the Accession of Henry the First, Volume 2 (of 2)
The second volume of Edward A. Freeman's Reign of William Rufus, published in 1882, carries the story of the Conqueror's son from 1093 to his death. Its three long chapters treat the wars with Scotland, Northumberland and Wales, including the death of Malcolm Canmore and the rebellion of Robert de Mowbray; the king's last campaigns in Maine and the Vexin while his brother Robert was away on crusade; and the hunting accident in the New Forest in August 1100, Henry's seizure of the treasury at Winchester and his coronation three days later. Freeman, who had just completed his History of the Norman Conquest, writes at enormous length from the chroniclers, with appendices arguing every disputed point. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
