The history of the Norman conquest of England, its causes and its results, Volume 3 (of 6)

by Edward A. Freeman

About 19 h 39 min of reading70 chapters

This third volume of Edward A. Freeman's History of the Norman Conquest, published in 1869, covers the single year 1066, which Freeman called the reign of Harold and the interregnum. It begins with Edward the Confessor's death and Harold's election and coronation, turns back to William's career in Normandy, and then follows the diplomacy of the summer, the invasion of Harold Hardrada and the battle of Stamford Bridge, the Norman landing and the battle of Hastings, which Freeman insisted on calling Senlac, and the weeks before William's coronation. Freeman walked the battlefield and argued every point from the sources; his appendix on disputed questions is nearly as long as the narrative, and the prose is vigorous and partisan. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
