The Red Lily — Complete
The Red Lily, published in French in 1894, is Anatole France's novel of jealousy among the leisured. Thérèse Martin-Bellème, married to a politician who bores her, has a long-standing lover, Robert Le Ménil. On a visit to Florence she falls in love with the sculptor Jacques Dechartre, and the second half of the book follows the way his need to possess her past as well as her present destroys what they have. The title is the emblem of Florence, and the city, its churches and its expatriate society are drawn with affection. France writes with irony and precision, and the poet Choulette, drunk, devout and anarchic, supplies a running commentary on the lovers. This is an English translation of the complete novel. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
