The Life of Joan of Arc, published in French in 1908 and translated by Winifred Stephens Whale, is the two-volume biography by the novelist Anatole France. France follows the peasant girl of Domremy from her childhood and the voices she heard, through her journey to the Dauphin at Chinon, the examination at Poitiers, the relief of Orleans and the coronation at Reims, to her capture at Compiegne, the long trial at Rouen and her death in 1431. A final section covers the rehabilitation trial and the impostors who later claimed her name. France was a skeptic who admired Joan, and his account treats the visions as sincere while looking hard at the clergy and politicians who used her. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
