The Professor

About 5 h 53 min of reading26 chapters

The Professor was Charlotte Brontë's first novel, written before Jane Eyre but rejected by publishers and only published in 1857, two years after her death. William Crimsworth, an orphan of good family, refuses the church and tries working as a clerk for his harsh brother, a Yorkshire mill owner, before leaving for Brussels to teach English. There he works in a boys' school and then in a girls' school next door, where he is drawn to the headmistress, Mademoiselle Reuter, and to a quiet, poor pupil-teacher, Frances Henri. Drawing on Brontë's own experience in Brussels, the novel is a restrained, sharply observed story of work, independence and love won by effort. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
