Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855) was an English novelist, the eldest of the three Brontë sisters who survived to adulthood, raised in the parsonage at Haworth in Yorkshire. She worked as a teacher and governess, and published a volume of poems with her sisters Emily and Anne in 1846 under the names Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell. Jane Eyre, which appeared in 1847, made Currer Bell famous before anyone knew who she was. Shirley and Villette followed; The Professor, her first novel, was published only after her death. She outlived all her siblings and died in 1855, in the first year of her marriage, at thirty-eight.
