The Princess

by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

About 1 h 47 min of reading8 chapters

The Princess: A Medley, first published in 1847, is a long narrative poem by Alfred Tennyson. During a summer festival at an English country house, a group of young people take turns telling a story: a prince betrothed in childhood to a princess who has founded a university for women from which men are banned. He and two friends steal into it disguised as women, with comic and then serious results. The blank verse is broken by lyric songs, among them "Tears, Idle Tears" and "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal." Tennyson treats the debate on women's education with gentle irony and real sympathy. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
