Idylls of the King

by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

About 5 h 37 min of reading13 chapters

Idylls of the King is the cycle of twelve narrative poems in blank verse in which Alfred, Lord Tennyson retold the legend of King Arthur, published in stages between 1859 and 1885. It runs from "The Coming of Arthur" to "The Passing of Arthur," and between them follows Gareth and Lynette, Geraint and Enid, Merlin and Vivien, Lancelot and Elaine, the quest of the Holy Grail, Pelleas, Tristram, and finally Guinevere's parting from the king. Tennyson drew mainly on Malory and the Mabinogion, but he shaped the material into a study of an ideal order corroded from within by faithlessness. The poems were enormously popular in Victorian England and fixed the image of Camelot for a century. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
