The Popular Religion and Folk-Lore of Northern India, Vol. 2 (of 2)
William Crooke, a member of the Bengal Civil Service and a leading folklorist of India, published The Popular Religion and Folk-Lore of Northern India in 1893 and revised and illustrated it for this edition of 1896. The second volume begins with the evil eye and the countless protections against it, from metals, coral, salt and spittle to amulets, knotted cords and tattoos, together with funeral rites and ways of laying ghosts. It continues with tree and serpent worship, totemism and fetishism, the worship of animals, the black art of witchcraft, and the festivals and ceremonies of the countryside. Crooke records village beliefs in detail, comparing them with customs elsewhere. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
