The Popular Religion and Folk-Lore of Northern India, Vol. 1 (of 2)
William Crooke, an officer of the Indian Civil Service, published The Popular Religion and Folk-Lore of Northern India in 1894 and rewrote it for this two-volume edition of 1896, adding material gathered in his ethnographic survey of the North-Western Provinces. His subject is not the religion of the Brahmans but the everyday beliefs of the villages. This first volume treats the godlings of nature, the worship of sun, moon, earth and thunder, the heroic and benevolent godlings, the godlings of disease, the worship of the sainted dead and the fear of the malevolent dead, and ends with the ghosts that haunt trees, flowers, the hearth and the house roof. Crooke writes as a collector, with comparisons from European folklore. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
