The Planet of Peril, published in 1929, is the first of Otis Adelbert Kline's Venus novels and his answer to Edgar Rice Burroughs's Mars. Robert Grandon, a bored young Chicagoan, is offered by a scientist the chance to exchange minds with a man on Venus, and wakes in a slave camp on the planet the natives call Zarovia. He escapes, meets the princess Vernia of Reabon, and is swept into a conspiracy against her throne, pursued across seas and jungles by the flying grampites, enslaved by the giant insect-like sabits, and brought face to face with the usurper Destho. Sword-fights, airships and monsters follow in quick succession. The story first ran as a serial in Argosy. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
