The Oregon Trail: Sketches of Prairie and Rocky-Mountain Life

by Francis Parkman

About 8 h 35 min of reading27 chapters

In 1846, Francis Parkman, a young Bostonian just out of Harvard, set out from St. Louis with his cousin Quincy Adams Shaw to see the West before it changed. The Oregon Trail is his account of the journey: the frontier towns, the emigrant wagon trains, buffalo hunts on the plains, Fort Laramie, and the weeks he spent living with a band of Oglala Sioux, before the return along the Arkansas River by way of Bent's Fort. Parkman writes with energy and an eye for landscape and character, and with the prejudices of his class and time. Later historians read it as a firsthand record of the plains on the eve of mass emigration. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
