La Salle and the Discovery of the Great West is the third part of Francis Parkman's history France and England in North America, first published in 1869 and revised ten years later. It follows René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, from his arrival in Canada through the building of forts on the Great Lakes, the loss of his ship the Griffon, the descent of the Mississippi to its mouth in 1682, and the disastrous attempt to found a colony on the Texas coast that ended with his murder by his own men. Parkman also tells the stories of Marquette and Joliet. He wrote from documents copied in French archives, and with a novelist's eye for weather and character. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
