The Open Boat and Other Stories
The Open Boat and Other Stories was published in London in 1898 and gathers seventeen pieces by Stephen Crane in two groups. The title story recounts, almost exactly as it happened, the thirty hours Crane and three other men spent in a dinghy after the steamer Commodore sank off Florida in January 1897. The first part, "Minor Conflicts," also includes "A Man and Some Others," "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky," "The Five White Mice" and "Death and the Child"; the second, "Midnight Sketches," collects shorter New York pieces such as "An Experiment in Misery" and "The Men in the Storm." Crane's prose is spare, visual and unsentimental, and the collection shows the range he reached before his death at twenty-eight. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
