Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which Stephen Crane published at his own expense in 1893 under a pseudonym and revised for a trade edition in 1896, is a short novel of the Bowery, where Maggie grows up in a tenement with a drunken mother and a brawling brother, Jimmie; she "blossoms in a mud puddle," takes a factory job, and is seduced by Pete, a bartender whose swagger she takes for elegance. When he abandons her, her family casts her out as a disgrace, and the city finishes the work. Crane was twenty-one when he wrote it; the flat, ironic style and the sympathy for a girl destroyed by her surroundings made it a landmark of American naturalism.
