The Note-Books of Samuel Butler
The Note-Books of Samuel Butler, published in 1912, ten years after his death, is a selection made by his friend Henry Festing Jones from the notebooks Butler kept throughout his adult life. Butler wrote down whatever he wanted to remember, usually something he had said himself, and Jones arranged the notes by subject. They range over life and death, heredity and memory, morality, religion and the Church of England, Christ and the resurrection, money, the family, music and his devotion to Handel, painting, literature, Homer, Shakespeare's sonnets and his own books, Erewhon and The Way of All Flesh. Short, witty and often contrary, they read as a self-portrait in fragments. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
