Erewhon, Samuel Butler's satire of 1872, begins as a colonial adventure: a young sheep-farmer crosses a mountain range and finds a hidden nation whose name is nowhere spelled backwards. In Erewhon illness is a crime and crime an illness, treated by sympathetic straighteners; the Musical Banks issue a currency nobody uses; the Colleges of Unreason teach hypothetics; and all machines have been destroyed after a philosopher argued, in the chapters called The Book of the Machines, that they were evolving toward consciousness. Butler drew on his years in New Zealand for the landscape and on his quarrel with Victorian religion and Darwinism for the ideas. The narrator's escape by balloon closes the tale.
