The Mountains of California
The Mountains of California, published in 1894, was the first book of the naturalist John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club. Muir describes the Sierra Nevada from the inside, after years of solitary wandering: the glaciers that carved its valleys, snow banners blowing from the peaks, the passes, glacier lakes and meadows, and the forests, with a portrait of each tree from the sugar pine to the giant sequoia. Later chapters celebrate the Douglas squirrel, the water ouzel and the wild sheep, and recount a windstorm he rode out at the top of a swaying tree. His prose is exuberant, exact and devout.
