My First Summer in the Sierra
My First Summer in the Sierra, published in 1911, is John Muir's journal of the summer of 1869, when he went into the California mountains with a flock of sheep, a shepherd and a dog named Carlo. Moving slowly from the foothills up the Merced to the high country, Muir records everything: the trees, flowers, birds, bears and insects, the granite domes, the clouds and storms, and the Yosemite Valley seen from above, before the trip continues to Mount Hoffmann, Lake Tenaya, Bloody Canyon and Mono Lake, and the Tuolumne meadows. He despises the sheep he calls hoofed locusts and finds in the mountains something close to religion. His own sketches illustrate the book.
