The Memorabilia
The Memorabilia, presented here in Henry Graham Dakyns's translation, is Xenophon's defense and portrait of his teacher Socrates, written some years after the philosopher's execution in 399 BC. The first book answers the charges of impiety and corruption of the young by describing Socrates's piety and self-control, and the remaining three books record conversations: with his son Lamprocles about gratitude to parents, with young men about friendship, politics and the duties of a general, with the courtesan Theodote, with the sophist Antiphon and with Aristippus about pleasure, and with the painter Parrhasius about art. Xenophon's Socrates is more practical and less ironic than Plato's, a plain moral teacher, and the book is the other main source for the historical man.
