Hellenica

by Xenophon

Translated by Henry Graham DakynsAbout 8 h 21 min of reading9 chapters

The Hellenica is Xenophon's history of Greece from 411 BC, where Thucydides breaks off, to the battle of Mantinea in 362, translated here by Henry Graham Dakyns. Its seven books cover the last years of the Peloponnesian War and the fall of Athens, the rule of the Thirty and the restoration of the democracy, the Spartan supremacy and its wars in Asia and against Thebes, and the rise of Thebes under Epaminondas. Xenophon served under Sparta and admired its king Agesilaus, and his sympathies color the account, but he was present at or near many of the events he describes, and his book is the only continuous contemporary narrative of the period. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
