The Medicine-Men of the Apache, published in 1892 in the ninth annual report of the Bureau of Ethnology, is John Gregory Bourke's study of the healers and ritual specialists he came to know as a cavalry officer in Arizona and New Mexico. He describes their methods of treating disease, their paraphernalia, scalp shirts, bull-roarers, necklaces of human fingers and teeth, scratch sticks and drinking reeds, and devotes long chapters to hoddentin, the sacred pollen of the tule, and to the izze-kloth or medicine cord, in each case ranging widely into comparisons with other peoples ancient and modern. Bourke's own observations are valuable; his comparative digressions are of their time. Illustrations accompany the text. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
