Scatalogic Rites of All Nations
A dissertation upon the employment of excrementitious remedial agents in religion, therapeutics, divination, witchcraft, love-philters, etc., in all parts of the globe
Scatalogic Rites of All Nations, published in 1891, is the strangest book of John Gregory Bourke, a United States cavalry officer and ethnologist who served on the southwestern frontier. Its starting point was a ceremony of the Zuni people that he witnessed, which he compared with the European Feast of Fools and other festivals of misrule. From there he compiled, from more than a thousand sources, a world survey of the uses of excrement and urine in religion, medicine, divination, witchcraft, love potions and daily life, from ancient cultures to the folk practices of Europe and the Americas. Printed for scholars and marked not for general reading, it remains a curious landmark of early anthropology.
