The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints, Vol. 7. July
Alban Butler's Lives of the Saints, first published in the 1750s, arranges the saints of the Church by their feast days through the calendar year. This seventh volume, from a 1908 New York edition, covers the month of July. It opens with Saint Rumold, patron of Mechlin, and moves day by day through martyrs, bishops, abbots, hermits and holy women, from figures as widely venerated as Saint Ulric of Augsburg and Saint Odo of Canterbury to local saints of Ireland, Brittany and Wales. Each life combines a narrative drawn from older records with Butler's moral reflections and notes on his sources, in the measured prose of eighteenth-century English Catholic scholarship. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
