The Lilac Sunbonnet, published in 1894, is S. R. Crockett's love story of Galloway in the early nineteenth century. Ralph Peden, a divinity student from Edinburgh, comes to the manse of Dullarg to study under a dour minister of the strictest Covenanting sect and meets Winsome Charteris, who runs the neighboring farm of Craig Ronald for her grandparents and wears the lilac sunbonnet of the title. Their courtship is complicated by a jealous cottar's daughter, the suspicions of the kirk and a secret in Winsome's parentage. Crockett writes in the Kailyard manner, with broad Scots dialogue, humor at the expense of elders and herd boys, and a tender feeling for the moors and summer evenings of his own country.
