Samuel Rutherford Crockett (1859–1914) was a Scottish novelist, one of the most popular of the Kailyard school of sentimental fiction about rural Scotland. Born illegitimate on a Galloway farm and educated at Edinburgh University, he was a Free Church minister at Penicuik when The Stickit Minister (1893), a collection of stories, made his name; he resigned his charge in 1895 to write full time. The Raiders, a Galloway adventure of smugglers and gypsies, The Lilac Sunbonnet, Cleg Kelly and The Grey Man followed, and he eventually published more than sixty books, many of them historical romances of his native southwest Scotland.
