The Life of George Washington, Vol. 2
Commander in Chief of the American Forces During the War which Established the Independence of his Country and First President of the United States
John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States, wrote his Life of George Washington from papers lent to him by the general's nephew Bushrod Washington, and it first appeared between 1804 and 1807. This volume of a later edition begins with Washington's birth in 1732, his mission to the French on the Ohio, Fort Necessity, Braddock's defeat and his command of the Virginia regiment, then moves to his appointment as commander in chief in 1775. It follows the siege of Boston, the invasion of Canada, the fighting in Virginia and the Carolinas, the loss of New York and the retreat across New Jersey. Marshall, who had served under Washington, writes with admiration and close attention to military detail.
