The Life of George Washington, Vol. 1
Commander in Chief of the American Forces During the War which Established the Independence of his Country and First President of the United States
John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States, wrote his Life of George Washington from the papers left to Bushrod Washington, the president's nephew, and published it in five volumes beginning in 1804. This first volume is in fact an introduction to the whole work, a history of the English colonies in North America from the voyages of Cabot and the charters of Elizabeth through the settlement of Virginia, New England and the other colonies, their quarrels with Indian nations, the French and with the Crown, and the long series of colonial wars. Marshall writes as a lawyer and a Federalist, giving careful attention to charters, governments and the growth of colonial self-rule.
