The Last of the Mohicans

by James Fenimore Cooper

A Narrative of 1757

About 9 h 54 min of reading34 chapters

In 1757, during the war between Britain and France for North America, Cora and Alice Munro set out through the forest to join their father at Fort William Henry, guided by the Huron Magua, who has his own reasons for the journey. They are rescued by the scout Hawkeye and his Mohican friends Chingachgook and Uncas, and the rest of the novel is pursuit, siege, massacre and pursuit again, ending in the mountains of the Delaware. James Fenimore Cooper published it in 1826 as the second of the Leatherstocking Tales and it became the most famous American novel of its generation. Its portrait of Indian life has been argued over ever since, but the chase has lost none of its force. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
