The Deerslayer, published in 1841, was the last of James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales to be written but tells the earliest adventure of their hero, Natty Bumppo. In the 1740s, the young hunter called Deerslayer comes to a wild lake in upstate New York, the Glimmerglass, to meet his Delaware friend Chingachgook, who hopes to rescue his betrothed from a Huron camp. There Natty joins the reckless frontiersman Hurry Harry and the old trapper Tom Hutter, who lives on the lake in a fortified house with his daughters, the beautiful Judith and the simple Hetty. As war breaks out, Natty kills his first man and faces capture and a test of his word. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
