The House of the Seven Gables, published in 1851, is Nathaniel Hawthorne's romance of an old Salem family and the curse that hangs over its house. Generations earlier, Colonel Pyncheon had a man hanged for witchcraft to seize his land; now the gloomy mansion shelters the impoverished spinster Hepzibah Pyncheon, who is forced to open a cent shop, her brother Clifford, broken by thirty years of wrongful imprisonment, their bright country cousin Phoebe, and a young daguerreotypist lodger named Holgrave. Their wealthy relative Judge Pyncheon, the colonel's living image, wants a secret he believes Clifford holds. Hawthorne wrote that he meant to show how the wrongdoing of one generation lives into the next, and the book is his gentlest treatment of that theme. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
