The History of Trade Unionism
(Revised edition, extended to 1920)
Sidney and Beatrice Webb published The History of Trade Unionism in 1894, the first full account of British unions from their origins in the eighteenth-century trade clubs, and reissued it in 1920 revised and extended to the end of the First World War, the edition given here. It traces the struggle against the Combination Acts, the revolutionary unionism of Robert Owen's time, the "new model" societies of the skilled trades after 1850, the legal victories of the 1870s, the new unionism of the dockers and gasworkers in 1889, and the movement's growth into a national power during the war. The Webbs wrote from the unions' own records, and added a bibliography of their other works. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
