The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling
A baby is found in the bed of Squire Allworthy, the most benevolent landowner in Somerset, who raises the boy as his own. Tom grows up generous, impulsive and susceptible to women, loves Sophia Western, the daughter of a neighboring squire, and is undone by the schemes of his pious half-brother Blifil. Cast out, he takes to the road with the barber-surgeon Partridge, and the novel follows him through inns, highwaymen, a Jacobite scare and the drawing rooms of London before the question of his birth is settled. Fielding published it in 1749 in eighteen books, each with an introductory essay in which he talks to the reader about what a novel is and should be. It is long, bawdy, intricately plotted and good-humored throughout. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
