Joseph Andrews, published in 1742, began as Henry Fielding's answer to Samuel Richardson's Pamela. Joseph, the virtuous young footman of Lady Booby and supposedly Pamela's brother, is dismissed after resisting the advances of his widowed mistress, and sets out on foot for the country and his sweetheart Fanny. On the road he is robbed and beaten, falls in with the learned, absent-minded and pugnacious curate Parson Adams, and meets a gallery of innkeepers, squires, clergymen and travelers. This first volume contains Books One and Two, with Fielding's preface on the comic epic in prose. Generous, comic and pointed, it marks a turning point in the history of the English novel.
