The History of Herodotus — Volume 1
This first volume of The History of Herodotus contains Books I to IV in G. C. Macaulay's translation of 1890. Herodotus of Halicarnassus, writing in the fifth century BC, set out to explain how the Greeks and the Persians came to fight, and he began far back and far afield: with Croesus of Lydia and the rise of Cyrus, with a whole book on Egypt, its customs, monuments, priests and Nile, with the madness of Cambyses, the accession of Darius and the Persian expedition against the Scythians, and with the geography and peoples of the north and of Libya. He reports what he was told, says when he does not believe it, and remains the most readable of ancient historians. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
