Herodotus

Herodotus (c. 484–c. 425 BC) was a Greek historian from Halicarnassus, and the author of the first great work of history in the Western tradition. He traveled widely in Egypt, the Near East, the Black Sea region and Greece, gathering what he saw and what he was told, and he spent part of his later life at Athens and at the new colony of Thurii in southern Italy. His Histories set out to explain the wars between Greece and Persia and in doing so describe the customs, geography and stories of much of the known world. Cicero called him the father of history.
